Argus Cycle Challenge 2011
An official entry to the Argus Cycle Challenge has closed. By entering and cycling for our "Give me a chance" Children's Foundation you have an extended window to enter until the 7th of Januarie 2011. Our aim for the 13th of March, is to raise R500 000 by having 250 riders cycling to give our kids a chance. Funds are directed towards the children's school and hostel fees, school clothing, books, sport equipment, extra mural activities including church camps and pocket money of R50 per month. Not only do the learners receive the necessary support to achieve on academic and sport levels, but they also have the chance to fulfill previously unreachable dreams, with our mentorship program where the local NG Kerk Sentraal, Stellenbosch "Die Familiekerk" is officially involved. Hey, Pastor Kobus de Leeuw is also cycling for the 2nd year! Yes, now you too can be part of making our country a better place. We have created a platform for you to make a difference and possibly have some fun doing so! Join in the fun & sweat with our celebrity riders, Ollie le Roux (Springbok Prop) cycling for the second year, Okkert Brits (former no 1 Pole Vaulter in the WORLD and represented GMAC in SA Celebrity Survivor), Chris Rossouw (Springbok Hooker), Gus Theron (Springbok Wing) and others.
The "Give Me a Chance" Children's Foundation was established in October 2004 by Delarey and Sandie Brugman of Alluvia Specialist Winery and Guest House in Stellenbosch. They created the Foundation in an effort to make a tangible contribution to South African society which would allow them to look back at the establishment of the organization as a turning point in their lives. Marco Hendriks was 16 years old orphan from our rural community, Kylemore when we interviewed him for acceptance into the Foundation. "What would you like to become one day." I enquired upon which this child with no seeming future from a rural informal settlement replied, "an Auditor, sir". Surprised by his knowledge I questioned his reasoning to which I found "I promised myself that my children would not grow up like I do". It broke my heart. I realised that all this child needs is a shot at life. This is what "Give me a Chance" does. Finding children with courage, against the odds and giving them an opportunity to make it in life. Marco went on to become Head Boy at Kylemore High in 2007. He undertook a bridging course at Stellenbosch University in 2008. Started his BComm. Accounting in 2009 and is busy with his second year on his way to become an Auditor. Marco has since been awarded a GT Ferreira Bursary as well as a sponsorship from Van Schaik Bookstore.
