‘Give Me a Chance’ Team Rides the Argus

Local Stellenbosch charity, the ‘Give Me a Chance’ Children’s Foundation has taken on the Pick n Pay Argus Cycle Tour Challenge. On 14 March 2010 twenty-two cyclists on the 'Give Me a Chance' team, both novice and experienced, rode in the Pick n Pay Argus in support of the charity. Among the riders was former Springbok Rugby player, Ollie Le Roux.

Through their efforts, the ‘Give Me a Chance’ team managed to raise an impressive R8,000 towards their efforts. Funds raised through the day will go directly to the sponsorship of a new trumpet for one of the ‘Give Me a Chance’ students. Jerome Jacobs, a matric student at Kylemore High, has been a beneficiary of the ‘Give Me a Chance’ Children’s Foundation since January 2008 and was selected for the program because of his musical abilities.

Jacobs, a talented trumpet player, is currently in his third year studying advanced music theory at the University of Stellenbosch while simultaneously finishing his high school career. Jacobs’ passion for music is unsurpassed and his devotion to his art is apparent having awarded him pass with distinction for the 2009 school year. His aspiration is to become a music teacher so he can encourage the development of the arts among the rural communities.

The ‘Give Me a Chance’ Children’s Foundation was founded by owners of Alluvia Specialist Winery and Guesthouse in 2004 in an attempt to provide promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds with the financial, moral, and academic support to reach their otherwise unobtainable dreams. ‘Give Me a Chance’ currently assists 12 students in reaching their fullest potential.
